Radical Transition to a Hydrogen Economy

The world is accelerating the shift to a hydrogen economy. In advanced countries, steps to revitalize the hydrogen economy are taking shape and picking up the pace. As the energy paradigm moves toward a hydrogen-powered ecosystem, the need for preemption and cooperation in the global hydrogen market is growing. It is time for both Korea and Canada to make a quick leap forward to take full advantage of this increasing momentum.

Accelerating the adoption of Hydrogen

Korea is making remarkable achievements as a 'first mover' in the field of hydrogen mobility. It achieved the world's No. 1 hydrogen passenger car supply (1,831 in Korea in 2020), and exported hydrogen trucks for the first time in the world. It is also leading the world by conducting demonstrations of various mobility such as hydrogen trams, ships, and forklifts.

Canada is also actively preparing for a hydrogen economy transition, with more than 30 hydrogen-related projects in progress. Alberta, in particular, is evaluated as having the capacity to quickly establish a self-sustaining hydrogen economy and become Canada's major hydrogen hub thanks to the established energy infrastructure in the region. B.C. is already a world leader in hydrogen and fuel cell technology. More than half of Canada’s companies active in the hydrogen and fuel cell sector are located in B.C.

What this forum offers

During this event, various topics will be presented to encompass the full hydrogen value chain from production, transportation, storage to consumption to create a new hydrogen ecosystem in both countries.

First, the current status and future prospect of regional hydrogen hub and advancing infrastructure will be addressed under the theme of “Building a Hydrogen Cluster” by Edmonton City and Ulsan FEZ. In the following session, under the theme of “Production,” the Government of Alberta and K-CCUS will walk you through the key hydrogen energy development projects including the carbon capture and storage(CCUS) technology, while KOGAS introduces the establishment progress for a liquified hydrogen value chain in Korea under the theme of “Transport & Storage”. In the last “End User” session, the real models and case studies of hydrogen use in transportation sector will be shared by Hyundai-Rotem and Loop Energy.
